Critiques

What is a critique?

Critiques allow you to request honest feedback about your images. Once you request a critique your image will show up at the top of our Critiques page.

Right... but what exactly is a critique?

That's a good question that requires some in-depth explanation. We'll collect links to any resources that help give good answers. (Feel free to let us know of any other links.)

What are critique credits?

If you want a critique, then we think it's fair for you to give some critiques in return. The best way to understand the whole critiquing process is to fully participate by receiving and also giving. Critique credits are meant to encourage this.

If you have 5 or more critique credits then you can request a critique for one of your photos. This will spend 5 of your credits. If you have less than 5 credits, then you can get more by commenting on other photos.

What is the best way to get more critique credits?

You earn critique credits every time you comment on an image that has requested a critique. The easiest way to find these images is on the Critiques page. It's best to give critiques to images with red below them.

Also, you can't get multiple credits per photo. So, if you leave 25 comments on one photo you'll just get one 1 credit... not 25.

Why aren't my critique credits going up?

You can only earn critique credits by commenting on certain images. Only images where the photographer has requested critiques will work. Luckily, we make it really easy to find these images. Just check out the Critiques page.

What does a red/yellow background mean for critiques?

A red background means that a critique has been requested and very few comments have been made. The yellow background means that a critique has been requested and it has received a minimum number of comments.

A yellow background will also appear for you if you've commented on that photo. This makes it easy for you to find new images that need critiques. Just look for red and you're good to go!

Why am I not getting really insightful and lengthy critiques?

Because our current critique system is pretty rudimentary right now. We're working on ways to improve things. This is one of our top priorities.
