Naturespixel (Leisa Hennessy) said 1 year ago:
hmmm but perhaps.. a 16:9 ratio would suit give it a try :)
beckn32 (Kim Norton) said 1 year ago:
Thanks Leisa. I've recropped and posted at http://beckn32pics.my-expressions.com/KimsExtrasindex.html if anyone would like to see the difference.
beckn32 (Kim Norton) said 1 year ago:
Oh, that so didn't work. Sorry y'all. I was trying to figure out how to place a link into the comments area and now you've got a bunch of garble. Here is the path for anyone interested.
beckn32 (Kim Norton) said 1 year ago:
Hmmm, now the link works. Sometimes simplicity is the answer. I just want to say to Brandon...you rock.

i think the shot lacks contrast and the texture (the sand, rocks, the water)..i guess this should be the fault of light, it must be a mid day...also some clouds on the sky would help..composition is not ok too, maybe the change of angle might help
Dale (Dale) added a critique 1 year ago:
I find this very boring sorry. Looks like a generic holiday snap. I'm sure you have good memories associated with it and that is waht matters :)
forgingahead (Bob Foss) added a critique 1 year ago:
Oooh, Dale's "critique" fails the "be polite test" I think. I do agree with chaba though about the contrast and composition. I find that playing with Levels in post processing can really help overcome that flatness. The foreground does not seem to add much to this shot so I would probably crop it a bit. As for relevance to this topic, I don't quite feel the connection to "Big City." But then the topic description was pretty vague, so I have rated pretty leniently on that aspect.
I see you have only been a member for a couple of days. Welcome...and keep the pictures coming!
jsmanseau added a critique 1 year ago:
The colors and contrast are a bit on the dull side, and I agree with cropping out of the foreground a bit, it doesn't add much to the picture. Also maybe playing with some levels might bring this a bit more life
Paulforrester (Paul Forrester) added a critique 1 year ago:
i also think this photo could be adjusted to take out the flatness-perhaps more people on the beach would have worked better

I see what you mean. Maybe I can try and dodge those textures in. I'll give it a whirl. BUt that ceiling is amazing. If you ever come out of the Wall St. station in NYC, you'll see it.
uncommondepth (Roberta Murray) added a critique 1 year ago:
I sure wouldn't want to be feeling off if I were having to walk up the stairs towards that ceiling. It is dizzying! I think the off kilter angle adds to that effect too.
I think you have captured a good range of tones in this image. The darkness of the bottom half doesn't bother me as much as the angle, and the bit of overhang at the top. I think there's so much going on in the frame it may have had more impact if the middle railing ran right up the center of the frame. But if you were aiming for an uncomfortable effect, then it's perfect as it is.
The more I think about it, the more I think I like that contrast between the bright lights on top and the darkness of the bottom. It speaks of climbing out of the darkness, and all those other cliches about finding the light.
I don't know what your level of Photoshop knowledge is, but if you do want to try to lighten the escalators or stairs, could I suggest you use a curves adjustment layer and masking instead of dodging?
dcrphotography (Daniel) added a critique 1 year ago:
Hmm..I don't think this fits the theme very well. I get the feeling of a department store opposed to a big city.
doilyboy (Martin Grey Gottlieb) said 1 year ago:
That's ok, Daniel. To me, this is the subway station at Wall St. Maybe because I know that it feels so Big City to me. The ceiling and tile work, the stone, etc... anyway, it strikes me that way which is why I posted it here. Thanks.
Paulforrester (Paul Forrester) added a critique 1 year ago:
i like this photo-and maybe if there were more commuters on the stairs it would have felt like a bigger city-nice shot though

Thank you for your comments. This is Manila, Philippines. I was there earlier this month. It makes me sad too, in one day we saw the city, the "Beverly Hills" and also the squatting area. Talk about an eye opening and humbling experience to see all three in a day.
doilyboy (Martin Grey Gottlieb) added a critique 1 year ago:
I like the image but would love to see it cropped a bit tighter, something to emphasize the 'have-nots' juxtaposed against the 'haves'. I know thatwould limit the nice reflection and the water a little but it would strengthen the statement maybe??
chaba (David Chabashvili) added a critique 1 year ago:
good shot! the reflection is very nice! one thing I would like to note is to process the sky little more - emphisize the coulds, little bit of contrast and color correction..good work!
cheguillaume (Pierre-Yves cheguillaume) added a critique 1 year ago:
Sometimes, photography is a troublemaker. This one is a good one and show us the contrasted way of living in the same city.
Paulforrester (Paul Forrester) added a critique 1 year ago:
a great photo-any photo that evokes an emotional response such as this is a good one

i think it's a strong image. i like the contrast of it, especially the dark eyes of the child. the cord behind is perfectly placed.

I love the repetition here with the four poles in the foreground. Also, the haze throughout creates a wonderful atmosphere.

Stunning - sorry I missed this one previously.
Very nice. Beautiful tones in the snow, and certainly fits the theme.
