I don't know where to ask this question...so I am asking it on one of my photos...why have there been no more featured photos?

sfkp (Tamara) said 2 days ago:

I noticed that, too! It seems there isn't much activity on Vazaar at all. :(

btw, when I was looking to some older photo's I saw this one. I love the unusual crop, good job!

Saludos.

pao_alfonso (Pao Alfonso) said 26 days ago:

oh yeah, i didn't notice that before. they are a little bit different, huh? I also just noticed that pole on the far left, haha. funny I should only notice that now. thanks for the comment!

I would crop the top so that none of the blue of the sky can be seen.

Bastian (Bastian Löhrer) added a critique 23 days ago:

Great image though, adore it!

boyd added a critique 12 days ago:

The depth that you have created in your image is really quite captivating, as is the detail in the trunks and branches. I also think that the toning that you have selected works very well to create a very strong image overall. Nice work.

Excellent shot, only the grain is too heavy.

sfkp (Tamara) added a critique 25 days ago:

Yeah, about the grain, I can't used to it either. I admire photographers who are using conventional camera's and still can control the light and everything. It must be a lot harder, especially becouse you can't see the result soon (the younger generation like me is heavely spoiled). And that's the reason I desisded to 'accept' the film grain.

But... I love the shot! I'm not sure about the brench in the foreground, however it brings some depth in the scene. I love the light and the large shadow and your camera-angle is well-choosen. Good job!!

pao_alfonso (Pao Alfonso) added a critique 24 days ago:

the grain made it look like a watercolor painting, and i don't mean that in a bad way. i love the mood in this photo a lot.

jKay added a critique 13 days ago:

I really like this image - it provokes an emotion - which is what a good photo should do. It screams out stark/empty/barren. There is nothing i personally would change about this image - would have this on my wall.

I wish I were able to see the tree better, the picture is out of focus. There also seems to be a lot going on at the bottom that is catching more of my attention than the tree itself.

For night shots, make sure to either put your camera on a tripod, turn up the ISO, or both. This is a pretty noisy picture, there is software that can help with it, as it is going to be inevitable sometimes. :)

Hope this helps!

narnold (Noah Arnold) added a critique 27 days ago:

I agree with the above comments, the photo is too blurry but the lighting in the tree is very interesting!

cvsuave (Chadler) added a critique 27 days ago:

I would think that cropping at that box/building thing would improve it a bit

Bastian (Bastian Löhrer) added a critique 26 days ago:

Ok this one is certainly too blurred and the items in the bottom appear distracting to me. I like the lighting however.

sfkp (Tamara) added a critique 25 days ago:

This must have be a really lovely view when you walked by, but unfortunality this shot doesn't works at all, imho. The part of being out of focus (could be movement, too) is bothering me the most. The framing isn't also my cup of tea: I would give the palm tree more space on the left, right and top.

I started out with a point and shoot, and let me tell you, I got some very amazing shots with it.

When you have a sky like this, best to point it at the leaves, and not the sky so much.

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 1 month ago:

Is there a "backlighting" mode on your camera, there is on my Lumix. It would help a lot with a shot like this.

cvsuave (Chadler) said 1 month ago:

Thanks for the pointers guys they're really useful!

mikeock (Mike Adams) added a critique 1 month ago:

I agree with the above on how to get the exposure right..
On some Point and shoot cameras you are able to set the focus and exposure by holding the button half way down.
I would point it at the leaves, get the exposure the way i wanted, by pressing the shutter half way down, then recompose to include everything. You might also want to experiment with exposing for the sky and the leaves to see which one works best for you... It also depends on the situation.

The D40 is a great starting point. That is the DSLR that I currently use.

I also started with a point and shoot and only within the last few months moved to the DSLR.

Bastian (Bastian Löhrer) added a critique 1 month ago:

Even with a (D)SLR you could not have exposed this scene properly without a REALLY strong flash since the difference in luminance between the sky and the foreground is just way too big.
