I like the darkness of this (that's just something I personally enjoy.) It does look like this may have been saved at a really low JPG setting, though, which adds some compression artifacts, especially around the people... something I find distracting.
My biggest complaint would be that we're looking at the backs of heads. The back of the head is much less appealing to me than the front. Many times a back-of-the-head shot just leaves me flat and wanting more (unless there's a good reason for it.)
I'm not sure about the significance of the uprooted tree/stump/thing on the right. In the context of this photo I finding a little distracting. Not sure what it adds to the overall scene.
The composition feels basically right to me and I really like how the trees fade out into the mist. Seems like a fun trail and atmosphere to ride in.
charmarie (Charmarie) added a critique 1 year ago:
I have to agree about the low compression of JPG,the B&W works here and the softness doesn't. I do like photos with a level of softness to them for effect but maybe this was a little overdone.

I agree with most of what's been said before. In this case, however, I don't mind looking at the backs of the heads as to me that's part of the story.

Very impressive shot!
Simple framing - and I love the negative space

throw out the rings . will be better

This image has a weird feel to it, but I like it. I agree that it would have more impact if the chrome rims weren't distracting, but otherwise it's an excellent composition!
Udower (Udo Weier) added a critique 1 year ago:
I like the composition. Especial the green colour and the crack in the floor. I think also the photo is better without the metal rings. Although it`s a wonderful photo

this really works for me. There's a connection in her eyes. The BG color and the light all work well. Nice shot.
NeilSmith (Neil Smith) said 1 year ago:
Before I read the comment above, I thought exactly the same thing, her eyes really connect with the viewer. Lovely shot.
sealgmg2 (Scott Niquette) said 8 months ago:
Stunning. It made me stop right away. Nicely done. I would not have cropped the top of her head off, but that's my style. I like your crop as well. Tight shot and well balanced.

of course it works well for the theme,
but the composition and exposure just doesnt cut it for me, a little bit more detail in the person looking out would have helped,
did you try having him in focus and the stuff outside the window in bokeh?
uncommondepth (Roberta Murray) added a critique 1 year ago:
My comments from when this was on WS are the same here. I think the background is overexposed. You could have used a higher aperture setting. The foreground person would then be totally silhouetted and crisper as well. I don't like the fuzziness of the foreground. This is a personal choice though.
I realize you probably didn't have that much time to make the shot though. It's an excellent concept. If you are from San Francisco I'd go ride the streetcar and try it again. It's also an excellent subject for this theme.
charmarie (Charmarie) added a critique 1 year ago:
This works very well, I like how you are using the other person view. As well as you can get some very good detail of the other car.
RachelValley (Rachel Valley) added a critique 10 months ago:
Oh the concept here is fabulous!...I only have a problem with the blown out areas....I simply love the perspective!
SeekingFocus (Jason Langley) said 10 months ago:
Thanks a lot, Rachel- This is quite an old shot, on film. Kind of a one shot type of deal, had to just go with what the camera was set on already so as not to miss the shot entirely!

This is wonderful Brandon. You caught that little sparkle in his eyes and the LB created a nice soft vignette.

Really strong capture, great dynamism and character; it's refreshing to see a LB image that doesn't shout out that it was used.

Overall this image has an incredible tonal range. This is what classic b&w photography looks like. Great job. It makes it even more interesting since Photoshop is being used. Do not have to do much in Photoshop to make a great image !

I would have liked a bit longer exposure here to bring out a bit more detail. As it is, it's a bit dark. Also, I don't like that bush in the foreground, perhaps a different angle with that omitted would work better.
Jem (Jem Lambert) added a critique 1 year ago:
This shot doesn't really do it for me, but I think it has potential. I think it needs more exposure to bring out more detail and add more colour to the scene. I'm not sure about the street light chopped off at the top too, but that aside the image certainly has potential - i'd maybe have a bit of a play with colour balance and see if you can introduce some varied tones instead of the standard tungsten effect.

I'm with Neil, rotate slightly to the right.
Dark right-side is fine.
kadenajack (Jack) said 1 year ago:
Thanks everyone for all the great critiques and suggestions.
This was taken kind of on the fly. I pulled up and saw this guy fishing and I positioned myself in the one place where I could silhouette him against the reflections on the water. The wind was blowing that bush around and there was a light chop in the bay. The fisherman was moving a lot, so I limited my exposures to 10 seconds and I only got to take a couple before he quit for the night. This was the best of the bunch.
Thanks for pointing out the cut off light post. I never really looked up to notice that until a few of you mentioned it. I may try to recreate this another night, since there are often people fishing in this area. I'll take your pointers to heart if I do try it again.
leaves added a critique 1 year ago:
great catch, this shot sounds like it was a pain.
if your bored one night try playing with the crop to level the horizon and maybe recreating the top of the closest lamp post from the next fully shown lamp post would be a feat.
this is a cool shot and i think with these two minor changes it would really improve the composition. :)

Really like the emotion showing here, she seems really happy. If I were to make one suggestion it would be to maybe try a square crop with her head slightly to the right of centre frame. I think it would help concentrate the eye on her and hide thos brick and blue seat. However, it is a lovely portrait.
beckn32 (Kim Norton) said 1 year ago:
I really like that you've kept this beautiful lady in color instead of going black and white. The lighting is wonderful on her skin and I want to smile with her.
I don't want to come across as a sharpness-freak, but I do find the softness of the horses & their riders lessens my enjoyment of this image a *little*. I'm sure this was down to the conditions, it looks pretty murky.
I like the misty background, gives a sense of the conditions & adds to the depth of the image. I'm not sure about the riders' placement though. There's something that just feels a little awkward about it. I think it might be the right-most person/horse, if it was just the other three, I think the image would work better. I think it's the combination of the fact that they are on a different plane to the others (lagging behind) and that they are the other side of that tree that separates them from the group and leaves me feeling uncomfortable.
