Love the framing you chose for this photo, I agree with Tamara on that most photos of animals should be focused on the eyes. I do however agree and think this photo is very good even with the nose as the focus, I do think that it would be a bit strong if the eyes were the focus, but of course that is just my opinion. great work!!
boyd added a critique 2 months ago:
I also agree with Tamara that this is a very strong shot and your use of focus and framing works very well. I also like that you have used high key exposure to very good effect. Well done.

Stunning...powerful... I love it in B&W. I agree that it does show the wild cat inside a domestic. beautiful

I thinks this photo is wonderful!!! I love photos of tree trunks and you have captured the texture excellently!! I also love the b&w! Keep those amazing photos coming!!!

une belle texture et le B&W est superbe. Le flou ne semble pas très naturel.

Beautiful job of getting the leaf and butterfly in focus. I agree with Jeff though that opening up even more to really throw the background out of focus would might add to the separation between the main subject and the background as well as simplifying the photo by smoothing out some of the extra elements that are competing for attention in the background. I also like the leaf coming in from the bottom right corner and moving along the bottom third. I have been just roughly playing with different crops on this photo (covering parts with my hand on the screen) and I really do like the butterfly dead center. Its harder to say but cropping up from the bottom to really put the leaf in the corner might be effective. Overall a nice shot, simplifying and separating the background would really bring it together.
Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 2 months ago:
A tighter DoF would help this a lot. It would push the background back in importance. Dodging the background a bit would help too. Looks like you may have used a diffused flash?? A wider aperture and faster shutter speed might have allowed you to use exiting light too.
boyd added a critique 2 months ago:
I generally agree with the above comments about dof etc, but I really like the framing you have used to position the subject dead centre with plenty of space around. Great work.

Yeah a better top-framing would make a huge improvement.

I agree with all the positive comments above. I like the fact that this could be a beach in so many places and that it carries with it so many emotions. Well done.

Great photo, taking the shot from down below with a wider angled lens really gives the photo the feel of innocents and wonderment. All in all its a wonderful photo.

I think this is well done. I particularly like the off-center composition because the way she is turning allows her hair to lead your eye back into the frame.
Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 2 months ago:
Yes, nice framing. The disappointing part is the softness of the hair that is over her face. A wider aperture and a faster shutter speed would help a lot with that and it would also put the background more into the blur of the tighter DoF. This would help to separate her more from the trees.
boyd added a critique 2 months ago:
I also think that the composition and energy you have captured with this shot are very strong. I agree with Clyde that a faster shutter speed might have made it even stronger.
snaps (Dana N) said 2 months ago:
Thanks for the feedback. Currently it's the shutter settings I'm having the most trouble mastering!

I agree with the softness on her face being dissapointing... I do love that she is off center

De foto omzetten in B&W wil nog wel eens helpen bij afbeeldingen van een mindere kwaliteit, dan stoort het minder. Ik heb even iets uitgeprobeerd: www.edelsmidhansmulder.nl/Sufkipje/Losse%20fotos/e...
Persoonlijk vind ik b&w nog net iets dramatischer in dit geval. Maar zowiezo vind ik het erg knap wat je met deze foto hebt gedaan.

Tamara

Wow...you can't even tell that it's 2 pictures put together! Good job on that. I think it's a good picture, except for the low quality.
chaba (David Chabashvili) added a critique 2 months ago:
Good work. I would add some more drama to the sky here. Also in my view the composition is just too tight.

I like this one, very graphic, very simple, but elegant. Nice job. Were was this taken?? Have you ever been to Wagga? I lived there for a couple of years in the late 80's, teaching at the Uni.
narnold (Noah Arnold) added a critique 2 months ago:
I like how the tower is slightly off center, I agree with Beamer, very simple but beautiful! I really like the b&w also! Great job
boyd said 2 months ago:
@ Clyde, thanks, this was taken in Toowoomba - a country town about 120km west of Brisbane in Queensland and more than 1000km north of Wagga. I haven't been to Wagga, but if the buildings are as nice I will have to put it on my list.
@ Noah, this is "real" b&w - Ilford HP5+ film shot with an old-school Mamiya 645pro that I am trying to learn how to use.

I like the colours and the repetition in this shot. I also like the inclusion of the worker in the lower opening to add interest and scale. Your choice of crop is interesting and I am wondering how square framing would have looked. Well done.
Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 2 months ago:
I agree with all of Boyd's comment. The top 15% is not gaining you anything. Not sure a true square would work, but if you cropped to one window above the upper opening it would create a nice symmetry and a more balanced composition.

I keep on coming back to this!
