Awesome.
Fits the project that i am currently working on to bring the thoughts of home to the deployed troops.
Great capture IMO as i can feel the emotion just overwhelming you as you see him come off the plane.

Laurie (Laurie) said 5 months ago:

Thanks...I was actually shaking when I shot this. When I realized it was Rob coming off the plane, I just about lost it...it was so overwhelming.

I had found out only two days prior that he was probably going to be on this flight so I booked a flight for the very next day to get there to see him and spend a few days with him even though I wasn't absolutely positive he would be on that flight...I took a chance and it paid off. It was so worth it!

There were quite a few soldiers, a couple of bus loads full, from that flight, who didn't have any family there to greet them and that just about broke my heart. I know it's not always possible to get there, and I was very fortunate to be able to drop everything and go, but it still made me sad for them.

Next week he will be home, home for about 30 days of well deserved leave. It will be a great celebration as we also have a son graduating high school and turning 18 and Rob will be here for it.

A beautiful moment to share and a fitting launch to the theme. Thank you for contributing, Laurie.

mikeock (Mike Adams) said 5 months ago:

Laurie,
The second description almost broke my heart.
I am so glad that when my brother returns to Japan, his wife is there waiting on the dock for him to return. Great that you could drop everything and take that gamble to see him..
Maybe we need a way to bring the family to the troops that cannot afford it?

Laurie (Laurie) said 5 months ago:

Mike...thanks again.

It was expensive for me to go on such short notice. Between the airfare, rental car, and hotel alone it was over $1,200 (not including meals/gas etc.). That was just for me to travel by myself. I did get a military discount for the hotel which was helpful. Sometimes you can get accommodations on the base as a family member which are very reasonable but there were no vacancies this time.

The expense wasn't the only issue. I would not have been able to bring the whole family even if I could have afforded it. His 2 brothers are still in high school and had several events that same week. The middle one had his prom that Friday. My husband was able to take a few days off from work to make sure the two younger ones got to school and to their various events so it worked out for us.

I'm sure it would have been impossible for me to go if he were stationed out of Japan, Germany, Korea etc. But he is stationed in the States so it was easier for me to get there.

It would be wonderful to be able to ensure that there would be family there to greet the soldiers, but I know that there are not unlimited funds to put toward something like that, besides, as with most government administered social programs it would probably end up an exercise in bloated bureaucracy and inefficiency, but that's a whole other discussion. Now putting together a program through the private sector, a private charitable cause, that might just work.

Es impresionante observar como penetra el sol por el bosque, gracias al angulo no es la cámara quien nos muestra los arboles, sino el sol. Felicidades. Saludos.
