Lorissa, thanks so much for the kind and insightful comments. Much appreciated!

doilyboy (Martin Grey Gottlieb) added a critique 1 year ago:

Without sounding like some zen master, sometimes, life is not in focus and it's the blur that brings clarity. I like the shot, the color and the movement, which BTW I think the thick black line at the frame bottom accentautes.

elijah (Greg Carrick) added a critique 1 year ago:

good piece of documentry type image.

bslomovic (Brant Slomovic) said 1 year ago:

Thanks very much to both doilyboy and elijah for taking the time to comment.

@doilyboy - bring on the Zen!

The best part of this photo is the boy's right hand on his hip - wonderful.

Best,
Jon

I like this a lot and agree with bslomovic that it might be under appreciated. I love the angle at which it was takes and the resulting DOF of the screen.

Too much blur and not a great composition - this photo says nothing to me.

Thanks for your comments guys! Well, actually this is a self-portrait. I was playing a bit with the camera. The only light on was the one from my nightstand. Thanks again!

MomentsinTime (Pete Brennan) added a critique 1 year ago:

Strong eyes! Very nice especially for a self portrait!

eggplant (Matt) added a critique 1 year ago:

I like the grain, the tight crop, the black blacks. In fact, I would burn in completely the extraneous stuff around your face to complete black.

TheAntipodes (Menno van Zaanen) added a critique 11 months ago:

Obviously, what the other people said: the eyes are really strong. I'm not so convinced about the grainy picture, I think it's a little bit too much. Especially the graininess of the background is a bit too light. If you look at this picture from a distance, it's not really noticable and looks much better.

jvgphoto (jon van gilder) added a critique 9 months ago:

Great eyes and great dimples - too grainy - not necessary in a shot like this - really distracts from a great face!

Best,
Jon

Love it. The DOF and the shadow of someone unknown. Gives the photo a real feeling of mystery.

stalking the rowers again! (i guess this was taken over the summer eh, what with every other of your photos for the last two months having loads of snow/ice)

eggplant (Matt) said 9 months ago:

I love this. I don't know exactly why, but it reminds me of something old timey...like the Great Gatsby. Weird, huh? Cool shot.

Ana (Ana Cortez) said 9 months ago:

Hey, Pete. Yeah..stalking the rowers, indeed....
I mean..come on.

shivahuja (shiv ahuja) added a critique 1 year ago:

of course it works well for the theme,
but the composition and exposure just doesnt cut it for me, a little bit more detail in the person looking out would have helped,
did you try having him in focus and the stuff outside the window in bokeh?

uncommondepth (Roberta Murray) added a critique 1 year ago:

My comments from when this was on WS are the same here. I think the background is overexposed. You could have used a higher aperture setting. The foreground person would then be totally silhouetted and crisper as well. I don't like the fuzziness of the foreground. This is a personal choice though.

I realize you probably didn't have that much time to make the shot though. It's an excellent concept. If you are from San Francisco I'd go ride the streetcar and try it again. It's also an excellent subject for this theme.

charmarie (Char) added a critique 1 year ago:

This works very well, I like how you are using the other person view. As well as you can get some very good detail of the other car.

RachelValley (Rachel Valley) added a critique 10 months ago:

Oh the concept here is fabulous!...I only have a problem with the blown out areas....I simply love the perspective!

SeekingFocus (Jason Langley) said 10 months ago:

Thanks a lot, Rachel- This is quite an old shot, on film. Kind of a one shot type of deal, had to just go with what the camera was set on already so as not to miss the shot entirely!

I like the three layers of this photograph: the sun level, the clouds level, and the water level. My only criticism is that the highlights are just a tad blown out. Other than that, great composition.

Lemmingstone (Peter) added a critique 1 year ago:

Yep. The layers work really well. On the few times I have tried to get a similar shot the sky has been all blue or pea soup. Nice one.

agme (Dmitry Antipov) added a critique 1 year ago:

Interesting
I like the light beams

TheAntipodes (Menno van Zaanen) added a critique 1 year ago:

The layers are indeed very nice. I wonder what the fuzziness around the sun is. Is that a bit of fog or humidity in the air? The picture looks like it has a bit of low quality compression there.

Sonoma added a critique 11 months ago:

I love it. I especially like the colors of the sky.

eggplant (Matt) said 1 year ago:

This is a great image. I like the community feeling of it, and yet mysterious as well...why is this community meeting on a beach fully dressed?
Also, I want to say that this is a great aspect of this site, how these photos from the oldest categories still crop up and get featured. Very cool.

ArneG (Arne Gulstene) said 1 year ago:

For me it is the image of the figure on the far right of the frame.
