Very serene feeling here. I think the whole thing about always having something in the foreground of landscapes is way overrated. This has a great feel, very nice exposure, great colors.
If you want a suggestion to possibly make it better, try cropping off about 10-15% of the top, just above the darker clouds. Might give a bit more expansive feel.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions - much appreciated as always!

Best to all,
Jon

JimiThing (Jim Machajewski) added a critique 3 months ago:

I agree with misu here. Something is missing. Some focal point. Great colors and scene, but it all lacks that certain punch. Also, beamer may be onto something with the crop suggestion. Although I would be careful not to put the horizon in the center of the frame. That might be a bigger mistake.

Gran toma, quizá el sol un poco menos centrado...

Thanks Pixim and Ana for the fav, much appreciated :)

Good choice for a square format, Pradeep. Very pretty light - so delicate - well done. The comp. is nice - did you have a difficult time with the crop on this one - just curious...

Best,
Jon

Thanks Jon, and yes, I had also liked this one with in a vertical format.

Good capture! I love the changing shades from the apples: light colored yellow-ish on the foreground to red and darker on the background.

Thank you, Tamara!

Very nice colors and lighting - a pleasing, though somewhat static composition, I think. Overall, a good job with the subject.

Best,
Jon

I like this. Very rustic. I'm not faving it though because I do wonder if more could be made of this. I don't know maybe a slightly less of a crop and a shallower depth of field?

The over exposed background is competing hard for attention. I think the tree and the ivy is a very nice subject, you should go back and explore it more. Maybe a low angle at a different time of day??

jvgphoto (jon van gilder) added a critique 9 days ago:

I like the composition, but the background is too dominant and spoils the beautiful tree in the foreground - at least, for me.

Best,
Jon

Too green for me...and a bit washed out...I am sure it was beautiful in person...hard to capture

Great moment to be sure - nice capture of the expression - maybe consider bouncing the flash to avoid some of the distracting shadows.

Best,
Jon

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 8 days ago:

I agree with Jon, the lighting feels very harsh for this subject. Nice moment, great expression on the face.

narnold (Noah Arnold) added a critique 6 days ago:

wonderful expression you've captured, I also love the eyes, it would be neat to see a closer shot of the child's face!!!

mikeock (Mike Adams) added a critique 4 days ago:

Only critique is the flash.
Either bounce, or diffuse it to remove the harsh shadows.

Excellent expression and moment!

mosesport (Moses) added a critique 2 days ago:

I agree about the harsh lighting, but the expression is fantastic! Great shot!

great work on this silhouette - very dynamic and draws one quickly in...

boyd added a critique 18 days ago:

Agree that the point of view here is very captivating and that your choice of exposure to put the figures into silhouette is very effective. Well done again!

Wow! Such positive comments from such photographers I admire -Tamara, Clyde, Noah, Jon and Boyd! Thank you!!!!! The photo is of my daughter holding the hand of a statue at the field of her first practice. The Native Americans are the founders of Lacrosse and the statue represents that. The September sky is a photographer's dream...and my daughter's red hair adds color.

Ludimaginary (Richard Vantielcke) added a critique 6 days ago:

Superb contre jour.
It's a shame that the background hide the shadows...

hampshire said 3 days ago:

Hmmm...Richard, I will remember that when looking for the perfect angle next time...thank you...PS-my daughter was happy the photo made the cover of the local newspaper.

This is positively prehistoric! The foreground looks like something out of my kid's dinosaur books.

Best,
Jon

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 4 days ago:

Yeah, prehistoric, especially with all that grain and character to the image... I do like this one, I think as a minor suggestion, the tonal range could be a little stronger. There is a awful lot of gray and not much black.

This is a stunning shot, Clyde. You have mastered this type of manipulation and I cannot think of a better image to show off these skills. Bravo!

mikeock (Mike Adams) added a critique 4 days ago:

Wow.
The beams of light, just perfect.
Great job with this and good to see that you are mastering this HDR!

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) said 4 days ago:

@ Boyd & Mike, don't really feel like a "master" yet. I still feel like I'm fumbling around with it. This may be one of my best attempts. I keep trying to get the advantage without the appearance of having used it...a tough balancing act for sure.

Thanks to all for commenting on this one!!

jvgphoto (jon van gilder) added a critique 4 days ago:

Great colors - great composition, Clyde. Sell it as a stock photo. Well done.

Best,
Jon

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) said 4 days ago:

Thanks jon!! I don't really know how to go about that. I looked into microstock about a year ago and they pretty much all said if you have sunsets and nice landscapes don't even bother...

Sweet capture...
I like a lot the lines on the background that compose the a nice frame.

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) said 6 days ago:

Yes, Noah, food stains.

boyd added a critique 4 days ago:

I like the composition that you have chosen here with the eyes smack bang in the middle of the frame. It works very effectively even with all the other colours and lines going on around her. Well done and seen.

jvgphoto (jon van gilder) added a critique 4 days ago:

Clyde,

Nice shot - there's a human being in your photograph! Question: how did you determine how to straighten this thing - you, obviously had several options...

Best,
Jon

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) said 4 days ago:

@jon, I don't remember fussing with the angle, that is right out of the camera. I cropped a little off the top trying to focus attention a little. This was shot at high iso and the D70s is not know for being very good at that, so I passed it through Noise Ninja and a little curves, that's it.

A little "flat". Maybe with some duotone treatment? I am curious to see to color version...

warreagle (Amy Warr) added a critique 8 days ago:

excellent for the topic~

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 8 days ago:

Color version not likely to be available, seems like this is another of Boyd's recent b&w film shots. Boyd, to me there seems to be too much tree and not enough water. The bokeh is nice and my eye wants to look around back there...

jvgphoto (jon van gilder) added a critique 4 days ago:

Well, the texture is here in abundance, but there is not much pop to this one...compositionally, in my view, it's way too heavily weighted on the right side.

Best,
Jon
