Scott,
I'm okay with the crop and composition. Like your colors and the sky and clouds look pretty good on my monitor. Nice work!

ScottCrouse (Scott Crouse) said 6 months ago:
Thanks guys! Mikhail, I thought about trying to crop it but it would take to much away from the image, you'd have to try and clone them out and that would change the reality of the image. After I looked at it for awhile I decided to leave them is as they add dimension to the image and help you realize how high up I am on the cliff. As for the sky, I agree somewhat, I was planning to whiten up the clouds a bit but forgot all about doing it in the end.

The flame is captured very well here with excellent range of colour. The tower itself, however, is not quite as sharp as I would prefer, although the overall offset of the composition is nicely thought through.
Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 9 months ago:
This is soft overall and the flames are overexposed. Looks like a jpeg, some artifacts? I would have cropped/painted out the angled roof at the bottom. I understand the framing, but I think it is just a bit forced looking. If you crop 10-15% off the left and top it would feel more attractive, imo.
jvgphoto (jon van gilder) added a critique 9 months ago:
This one needs help! It's way too soft and the composition is not strong. It needs straightening as well. The foreground is underexposed. At any rate, it is an interesting subject, so thanks for sharing!
Best,
Jon

@Ana, thanks for you "complement". I call your comment a complement because you found the image to be accurate representation of what this part of the forest really looked like. It was a bright sunny day, but under the oak canopy it felt dark and cool and very inviting. The California Black Oaks have a very gray bark. So yes you are right, dark and gray trees!! Oh, BTW, did you see the bright areas of sunlight landing right on the red blooming camellias??
This was taken yesterday at Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge, CA. Spring comes early to Southern California.
Beamer (Clyde Beamer) said 9 months ago:
@Jon, I tried a couple of different crops, but kept coming back to this, which is the "in-camera" faming. What do you think would work better??
jvgphoto (jon van gilder) added a critique 9 months ago:
Clyde,
I would have let that beautifully lit tree on the right function as the right hand frame. I'm sure you considered that - just a friendly suggestion.
Best,
Jon

Amy,
Another nice from you - well seen and well executed on both sides of the camera. I love the golden hue of this and the effect of the footprints in the sand - it's kind of Biblical, I think!
Best,
Jon

This is a very good shot. If I had to give any criticism, I think the detail of the stone would be brought out more with higher contrast, or maybe a high pas filter... or possibly even making it into an HDR shot. Looks great though!

Gracias Moses por tu comentario, al ser una fotografía nocturna, el modo "bulb" no no me permite el "horquillado" de exposición para realizar posteriormente un HDR.

Hi Tammy
Same feeling as Ana regarding the branches on the left. Regardless, this is a nice winter scene, with a good white balance.
tjm added a critique 7 months ago:
Good picture. I like the branches on the left. That area would have been blank without them. The whites and shadows are also a plus. Enjoyed this one.
shivahuja (shiv ahuja) added a critique 7 months ago:
IMO, i would have composed to not have the branches,
and maybe used a polarizer for a deeper blue in the sky,or maybe you could do that during PP.
mrsmorunion (Tammy Runion) said 7 months ago:
I knew that those branches were going to get me! I saw that, but thought I'd see what kind of feedback I got and you've all confirmed! Thanks for your comments.

Nice colours and it provides me a real 'holilday-feeling'. However, I would have zomed in more to one of the groups of fruits OR I would have zomed out so you could see more of the tree and its background.

I like the lighting of the water as it really gives a feel for the texture!
Great composition and excellent addition to the topic!

Unique interpretation of empty spaces. I like the composition, the placement of the boat and the colors on the water. This is empty spaces in many ways.

Ahh! My favorite colour: purple! Really great DOF. Those drups of water gives it an extra... I don't know... something. I love the detail of the pistils.

overall focus is too soft for this type of shot, in my opinion.
