Cripes, my fingers feel cold just looking at this shot. I like the evenness of the exposure and the good detail in the trees. Very neat work.

warreagle (Amy Warr) added a critique 3 months ago:

so that's what a snowstorm looks like...don't get much of that down here in l.a....[lower alabama]...i like this...don't really know how to critique it though. But I like it.

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 3 months ago:

Beautiful feel and tone you have captured here. Nice job. The only thought I have about improvement is perhaps to crop the top and bottom a bit. It might help create a feeling of emptiness and scope.

sambhara (Michael Bogdan) added a critique 2 months ago:

I like the shot a lot, I think i'd like it more if it were a tad cooler and if the darker areas got a little boost. just slight though on both of those. otherwise its great..

Nice picture and a great fit on the theme. Love its mood.

Congrats

Ok... So I like this image a lot, but I've got two problems with it. First off, it's way too contrasty. It makes it difficult to focus on any one thing in the image. My second complaint is in line with this too. I see that you shot this image with a g7 at it's widest angle, as a result the depth of field is HUGE. This takes away from the main focus of the image, the old man and the goat. So what I would do is open up this image in photoshop and select the fence and everything behind it and blur it. I did this quickly (and sloppily) myself and it turned out great. If you do those two things, this picture will look awesome... Of course, if you like it, that's all that matters... -mike

boyd added a critique 2 months ago:

I also like this shot, particularly the relationship you have captured between the man and the goat. There is a good range of tone, and I like the sharp focus on the goat's coat. Perhaps the scene is a little busy, but it is what it is (perhaps shooting wider aperture might help), well done.

elaine (elaine vallet) added a critique 2 months ago:

This is a very telling shot! there is a story here that you have definitely well captured... I like the contrast actually but I like strng contrasts in general and I don t think this one is too emphasized. the only thing I would change would be the DOF but really its not much of a problem

Wonderful story is at work here. Leaves me wanting to know more and to see more of this man and the goat. Very nice work!

Best,

Shot a the right moment... perfect!.

There is something strange about the depth in this image. If I look only to one of the big black rocks, it seems they have to be much further away then I look to the whole scene. Did you use a super wide angle lens or something? Anyway, it gives it a magical touch and I keep looking at it.

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) said 2 months ago:

In the day photography was quite simple: Minolta SRT-101 with a 55mm f1.7 lens and a couple of rolls of film. You could use that camera to chock the wheels of your pickup truck to keep it from rolling down hill and then go out and shoot this...

boyd added a critique 2 months ago:

Clyde, you have captured a very dramatic moment here. I like the way that you have balanced exposure with shutter speed to freeze the wave and not lose the interest in the sky. For mine, the rock in the left is a little darker than you might ideally want, but this is a difficult lighting situation in which you have found a fantastic compromise.

sambhara (Michael Bogdan) added a critique 2 months ago:

I love the power of this image. That massive wave crashing on that towering rock is just so intimidating. I also like the noise from the film grain that's absent from most photo you see today. I agree with sfkp, you nailed the decisive moment.....

jvgphoto (jon van gilder) added a critique 2 months ago:

Clyde,

Very nice shot - I so miss the days of film. Thanks for posting.

Cheers,
Jon

If you're "embracing" the blur, why comment that it's not sharp? I love the motion blur and that the one group at the top seems suspended above the rest. Could almost work in Abstract too.

narnold (Noah Arnold) added a critique 2 months ago:

Perfect photo for this topic, I really like the framing and I really like how you captured the blue sky for the background

boyd added a critique 2 months ago:

I agree with Clyde and Noah that this is a very strong image. Love the blur that you have going on here and framing against the perfectly blue sky is very nicely done.

sambhara (Michael Bogdan) added a critique 2 months ago:

Its nice, but a bit too distracting, The image is a bit too unfocused I think. If you could have kept that group more in focus I think would have had a real winner...

lauravink (Laura Vink) added a critique 2 months ago:

I really like to blur and the colours. Personaly these could even be more saturated for a even stronger image.

Yeah a better top-framing would make a huge improvement.

boyd added a critique 2 months ago:

I agree with all the positive comments above. I like the fact that this could be a beach in so many places and that it carries with it so many emotions. Well done.

This is a very well done picture. I really like it!

sambhara (Michael Bogdan) added a critique 2 months ago:

Great photo, taking the shot from down below with a wider angled lens really gives the photo the feel of innocents and wonderment. All in all its a wonderful photo.

Nice capture, they sure are interested in you. Very good capture. I might have "punched" the tonal range a bit.

cushmok added a critique 4 months ago:

bravo ! très belle image bien en relation avec le thème !

bluechameleon (Sharon Wish) added a critique 4 months ago:

Oh...this is really such an amazing capture! The artwork as a backdrop for these children works wonderfully. It's as though they have escaped a nightmare, and are completely unscathed. If I were to do it differently, I wouldn't change a thing :)

stilfoto (Stefan Nielsen) added a critique 4 months ago:

A great capture indeed - a pcure I can look at for a long time...
The children are perfectly placed in the frame and doing it in B&W was the right choice. The only minor thing I might have done differently is crop out the door on the left - but as I said: It's a minor thing. All in all it's a great picture.

sambhara (Michael Bogdan) added a critique 2 months ago:

I don't know which i like best; the children or the art work. One thing is for sure; they go great together...

Thanks Jim. If you both feel the square format would be better here, I'll try it out one day. Problem is that this is low quality scan of a print. Cropping would degrade the (low, I admit) quality even further. I'm still using film cameras a lot and to obtain the best digitals from slides/negatives, perhaps I should buy a neg scanner.

op_perrin (Olivier Perrin) added a critique 3 months ago:

belle composition, j'aime l'espace que tu laisses en hait de la photo, cela donne une superbe profondeur, et avec en cadeau le reflet du chien, parfait

AmberDawn (Amber Sullivan) added a critique 3 months ago:

I like the lines created by the full-size (not square), makes him look impatient to get going to wherever that leads. The leash did throw me for a bit, but I too like my photos straight from the cam.

Ladybug (Lisa Ruokis) added a critique 3 months ago:

What a stunning capture ~ a very unique perspective. The reflection totally makes it for me. :)

sambhara (Michael Bogdan) added a critique 2 months ago:

I agree with soreks that you should photoshop out the leash. I don't however feel cropping is necessary as I like the lost dog in a crazy world feel it lends to....

JBridges (Jim Bridges) added a critique 3 months ago:

Maybe it's just because I have taking to the square crop more and more in my own work, but I think the square format works for this image. Sure a landscape cropping might emphasize "empty space" more, but I think that still comes across the way you've done it here. It's a really nice photo.

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 3 months ago:

Lars, thanks for sharing the link to the collection. I would make the same composition comment about the whole series. This type of subjects, it seems to me, feels "cramped" or restricted in a square format. Just my opinion.

boyd added a critique 3 months ago:

Lars, very interesting series. Although this shot is strong on its own as is (colours, detail and foreground are fabulous), I would also prefer the main subject to be offset from centre to give the feel that it is a bit more isolated (preferably to the right so your eye has to travel across the frame and up the stairs). It just seems a bit too contrived with the current composition. Looking at your comments above is interesting given that you have invited critique.

sambhara (Michael Bogdan) added a critique 2 months ago:

Great picture, I love the isolated feeling of the shot. The fact that you can't see the tide anywhere adds to this i think and i especially like that...
